Your policy should keep pace with your home

Homeowners insurance is usually selected at a major milestone—often when a home is purchased—and then placed on autopilot. The home, however, keeps changing. Improvements, new belongings, and different ways of using the property can all affect the protection you need.

A regular conversation with an insurance professional can help keep the policy aligned with the home as it exists today. The following moments are especially useful reminders to schedule that review.

1. After renovating or adding living space

A remodeled kitchen, finished basement, new room, or upgraded systems may increase rebuilding costs. Tell your agent before or shortly after a major project so the dwelling limit and relevant endorsements can be reviewed.

  • Keep contracts, permits, receipts, and before-and-after photos.
  • Ask whether construction work creates a temporary coverage consideration.
  • Review detached structures such as garages, sheds, and fences too.

2. When valuable belongings change

Standard policies often place special limits on jewelry, fine art, collectibles, electronics, and other categories. An appraisal or scheduled-property endorsement may be appropriate when the value of an item exceeds those limits.

3. Before starting a home-based business

Business equipment, inventory, customer visits, and professional liability may not be fully covered by a personal homeowners policy. A quick review can identify whether an endorsement or separate business policy is the better fit.

4. When the household changes

Marriage, a new driver, a child leaving for college, a relative moving in, or renting part of the property can change both property and liability exposures. Sharing these changes helps your agent review the named insureds, limits, and optional coverages.

  • Review the policy at least once a year.
  • Maintain a photo or video home inventory.
  • Contact the agency promptly after any major change.
